What Do You Think About The Casey Anthony Trial?

What Do You Think About The Casey Anthony Trial?

This was the question put to me among friends at a recent picnic.

I actually feared this question because my answer is not a common one, and it invites odd looks from those who are looking for a simpler answers.

Like:

  • It’s a travesty of justice!
  • It’s unbelievable that Casey would get off with such a light sentence!
  • What were the Jurors thinking of!
  • Our justice system is collapsing!
  • What is this world coming to?!

My answer was roughly the following, to those who asked. They and others who listened simply looked at me with a with odd blank faces. Thoreau once said (roughly) that such looks were not necessarily a bad thing. I believe he was correct.

The whole thing reminded me of what I saw in a primate cage when I was around 12 years old and my parents took me to the Chicago Zoo.  The primates were watching me ,and the other human onlookers, with intense interest. They hooted, pointed and made faces at us and they were very intense and agitated. A couple of the male primates masturbated while they watched us, and we were both fascinated and repelled at the same time. It was a shocking display and I could not tell who the real observers were. I wondered who was entertaining who.

With regard the Casey Anthony debacle we, the observers were “the primates”.  We were the critters focused upon the bazaar display in gleeful self-stimulatory fascination.

The outcome of the trial confirmed what I have known for many years. This nation cares little about the behavior and fate of its young women and it cares little about its children.

The outcome of this trial, and the way in which Casey responded to Caylee’s disappearance (over 30 days without a report) suggests a systemic problem in America which will destroy us.

We do not care about the quality of our mother’s behavior and our children are expendable.

I hope you will review my post of 6/25/2011, When Girls and Women Were Special In America. Here I explain my thinking in greater detail.
