Religion and Fertility In America

Religion and Fertility In America

Perhaps nowhere are the indelible facts of the central theme of God in the founding of America’s Democratic Republic more clear and undeniable than in the stone edifices of the buildings and other structures of Washington D.C.. I thank my dear sister-in-law Jeanne Ollhoff for posthumously gifting me an edition of Newt Gingrich’s Rediscovering God in America: Reflections on the role of faith in our Nation’s History and Future (2006). I encourage you to read this powerful little book.

It is reasonable to wonder why in Europe religion has lost ground compared to in America. Francis Fukuyama describes this counter-intuitive outcome and provides a plausible explanations in his book, Trust: The Social Virtues and the Creation of Prosperity (1995).

“The U.S. Constitution prohibits the federal government from establishing a national religion, though it does not prohibit the states from doing so. Some individual states like Massachusetts had established religions as late as the 1830’s but the principle of the separation of church and state is an old and venerable one. One would think that the establishment of a national church, as in a number of European countries, would promote a strong sense of community, since it would bind national to religious and entity and give citizens a common culture beyond the political system. In fact, something of the opposite tends to happen. In countries with established churches, where religious identity is ascribed rather than voluntary, people frequently tend toward secularism and in many cases become openly anticlerical. Countries without established churches, on the other hand, often experience a higher degree of genuine religious observance. Thus the United States with no established church and increasingly secular public life, continues to enjoy a far higher degree of religiosity that virtually all European countries with national churches. This is true by almost any measure of religious feeling; church attendance, the number of people who assert that they believe in God, or the level of private charitable donations to religious organizations” (p. 288).

The reasons for this that Fukuyama describes are that people may feel that it is an “unwanted burden” when ones religion is mandated. When people are free to choose their religious affiliation they have a genuine interest in doing that and their church affiliation feeds that interest for young and old alike. It is also likely that in a “free market” of religions, that they compete to attract and retain members. Churches with mandated membership not likely be motivated to become so competitive.

Completion is widely known to provide for a greater diversity, quality and ease of access to choices available to consumers, independent of the products involved. Why should it be any different for religious choices?

One of the reasons that America has been able to stave off this proportional youth decline that has afflicted Western Europe, and much of the rest of the developing societies in the world is that America has retained a fertility rate which is slightly above replacement levels. As you may deduce, below replacement birth rates for a socioculture spells disaster. Two of the natural correlates within developing societies are increased education (leading to later marriage and fewer children) and better medical care (leading to an increasing aged population and an increasing handicapped population). This means that proportionately there are fewer young people in the culture-sustaining population to work, invent, create wealth, pay taxes and fight wars, etc.

David Goldman (2011), How Civilizations Die: And Why Islam is Dying Too,  discusses the central influence of Judeo/Christian religion upon the relative reproductive rates and viability of America and Israel in contrast to less religious and largely atheist counties.

The Industrial world’s lowest fertility rates are encountered among the nations of Eastern Europe where atheism was the official ideology for generations. The highest fertility rates in the developed world are found in countries with a high degree of religious faith, namely the United States and Israel. And demographers have identified religion as a crucial factor in the differences among populations within countries. When faith goes, fertility vanishes, too” (Kindle Loc. 195).

Of the Islam’s overall declining fertility rate and its dire predictions for that civilization’s future, Goldman reports the following:

“In the Islamists’ own view, the encounter of Islam with the globalized world has had catastrophic effects on a religion so deeply rooted in the habits of traditional society that it cannot survive in the harsh light of modernity. The closing of the Muslim womb is a symptom of a shock to the spiritual condition of the Islamic world, a loss of faith more sudden and more devastating than the past century’s trend towards secularism in the West” (Kindle Loc. 492).

There is more to come soon.

Newt Gingrich on Activist Judges

December 18, 2011

The Blaze posted a short article and an interview of Newt Gingrich on the topic of activist judges and the ballance of power between the President, Congress, and the Judicial branches of our Constitutional Government.

I think that his views on this topic are on the mark. What do you think?

Be certain to watch the video: Let Gingrich speak for himself on this controversial matter.

Gingrich: America’s Only Hope?!

Gingrich: America’s Only Hope?!

Much is going to be made about Newt Gingrich’s past divorce record and how he treated his wife who was in the hospital for surgery, etc. You can count on the liberal/progressive socialist, atheist, media and political operatives to smear his reputation in every way possible. This is because Gingrich is the greatest threat to their  their scurrilous political strategies of bald-faced lies, deception, and governmental grants, give-aways and other favors, to buy votes. I’ll bet he is the biggest threat to them, their  hopes and world-view, that they have seen since Ronald Regan.

The liberal progressives are terrified of loosing power because all they have to offer America is the most spectacularly failing blatantly socialist President in recent history. And. this is all they have at the very moment in history that America is obviously poised to fail if it does not return to its conservative political, social and economic roots.

Newt Gingrich is a brilliant intellectual, Professor of History and prolific author. Having spent my adult life among Ph.D. level professors, and sampled colleagues nationally,  I will judge that he must be somewhere above the 90th percentile of practical brilliance within that population.

As a debater, among all of the Republican Candidates and potential ones (that I know of) he is the most experienced informed, fierce, and skilled one that I have seen. Finally, Newt’s national and international political experience and knowledge is far beyond that most of his fellow candidates.

I admit, it is very easy to like Mitt Romney, who I now rank in second place. But, I fear that a more moderate personality and political tendencies, during truly emergency conditions, will not save America.

Please read the following short remarks by Newt’s daughter to prepare your selves to  assess and judge the character assassination attacks that the extreme left will soon launch against him.

I believe that President Obama’s handlers are horrified at the prospects of Newt Gingrich having him all alone in a series of long debates leading to the Presidential Election of 2012.

If you doubt me, please see the following video which is indicative of Newt’s consistently stunning debate performances. He will “knock Your Socks Off”!

P.S. Thanks to Lee Hornack for bringing this video to my attention.

“Rediscovering God in America”

The title to this blog is in quotes because it is the title to a New York Times BESTSELLER by Newt Gingrich. The subtitle is: “Reflections On The Role of Faith in Our Nation” (2006, by Integrity Publishers: Nashville, TN).

I strongly recommend that you read this small book that  undeniably documents the role of Christianity and God in the construction and success of this great nation.

The bed-rock values involved in every fiber of this massive creation were religiously based. The removal of the affirmation of these values from all public places, except the hallowed halls and monuments in Washington D.C., has been a self-destructive and propagandistic act of epoch proportions. “Separation of State” was never meant to be taken to this radical extreme.

This act, among many others, is a significant part of our decline and impending  downfall.

Joe Grunert sent me the following Email which comports with the documentation in the book I just referenced, so I am posting it for you to see.

As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U..S Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world’s law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view … It is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments!

As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.

As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see the wall, right above where the Supreme Court Judges sit, a display of the Ten Commandments!

There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington , D.C.

James Madison, the fourth president, known as ‘The Father of Our Constitution’ made the
Following statement:

‘We have staked the whole of all our political Institutions upon the capacity of mankind for Self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control  ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to The Ten Commandments of God.’

Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.

Fifty-two of the 55 founders of the Constitution were members of the established Orthodox churches in the colonies..

Thomas Jefferson worried that the Courts would overstep their authority and instead of Interpreting the law would begin making law an oligarchy the rule of few over many.

How then, have we gotten to the point that everything we have done for 220 years in this Country is now suddenly wrong and Unconstitutional?

Lets put it around the world and let the world see and remember what this great country was Built on The Holy Bible and belief in GOD!

Merry Christmas and God’s Blessings To You!

Merry Christmas and God’s Blessings To You!

As the times of Thanksgiving and Christmas draw near, there are already renewed and growing assaults upon America’s traditional Christian  Holidays. We Christian’s are too damned meek.

The assertion that the concept of  “separation of church and state” demands that these traditional celebrations must be expunged from our language and from all public places is a hideous lie. It is a lie that is successfully propagandized throughout our young population by the popular media and secular progressives in our legal and political sectors.

Our National Monuments, our Capital Building, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress are replete with Christian Religious writings, etched boldly and deeply into their stone records of our heritage. Yes, folks, this is public property.

The sceptic is advised to read Newt Gingrich’s book, “Rediscovering God in America (2006), published by Integrity Publishers, TN.  There, he or she will find dozens of other “slap you in the face” illustrations of this huge countercultural propagandist’s lie.

America! Keep fighting the forces of our undoing!

Censorship of Moral Values

August 27, 2009

Censorship of Moral Values

It is a bizarre twist that the minority secular forces in America, through the judiciary, have convinced the body politic that censorship of almost any sort is akin to a mortal Sin. Then, in the same way, they perpetrate the grand fraud that the Constitutional Separation of Church and State means that all references to Judeo/Christian guidelines to moral conduct must be expunged from the public domain.

Both are a monumental lies. These lies have credibility only because America has failed to educate its children, therefore its general public, about its own precious history;  the religiously based moral precepts of its Founding Fathers and their original intentions, hopes and dreams for our future.

The following quotes are taken from “Rediscovering God in America: Reflections on the Role of Faith in our Nation’s History and Future”, by Newt Gingrich.

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports” (p. 19).

George Washington, Farewell Address

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other'” (p. 19).

John Adams

“Religion and good morals are the only solid foundation of public liberty and happiness” (p, 19).

Samuel Adams

“The politician who loves liberty sees…a gulp [sic] that may swallow up the liberty to which he is devoted. He knows that morality overthrown (and morality must fall without religion) the terrors of despotism can alone curb the impetuous passions of man, and confine him within the bonds of social duty (p. 19).

 Alexander Hamilton

“Our country should be preserved from the dreadful evil of becoming enemies of the religion of the Gospel, which I have no doubt, but would be the introduction of the dissolution of government and the bonds of civil society” (p. 20).

Elias Boudinot

“Religion and Virtue are the only Foundations, not only of Republicanism and or all free Government, but of social felicity under all Governments and in all Combinations of human society” (20).

John Adams

“Reading, reflection, and time have convinced me that the interests of society require the observation of those moral precepts…in which all religions agree” (20).

Thomas Jefferson

“Religion is the only solid Base of morals and Morals are the only possible Support of free governments” (p. 20)

Gouvernent Morris

“The only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments” (p. 20).

The following quote (Italics) are the words of Newt Gingrich, to be found on page 21 of his book:

“For the founders, it was abundantly clear. Religious liberty and freedom of religious expression would be indispensable supports for our democratic traditions of government and our pluralistic society. And so they have for over two hundred years.”

“It is important to recognize that the benefits of these supports accrue to people of not just one particular faith, but those of all faiths, and for all people of goodwill, whether religious, agnostic, atheist, or radical secularist. Likewise, the Founders clearly believed that the weakening of these religious supports—such as by the hostile treatment of religion in American public life—threatens to undermine the very republican institutions under which the religious and the non-religious alike find their liberties.”

I believe these assessments of the essential beneficial effects of religion on the health and viability of America’s miraculous Constitutional Republic to represent an abiding truth.
