The Psychology of Socialism: 2 (Modernization)

The Psychology of Socialism # 2 ( Modernization)

I judge that the the social and political infestation of Marxist Socialism in America is analogues to any disease that sickens an individual.  When someone’s immune system is sufficiently weakened, they become increasingly susceptible to various diseases; some of which are lethal.

The psychological and spiritual health of our population greatly affects America’s resistance to the killing effects of Marxism on societies and their cultures.

Factors that affect the psychological health of America’s population is the topic of what follows.

It is critically important to know about the Psychological Laws and Principles that tend to shape a population’s behavior patterns; the ones that I explained in my previous post, “The Psychology of Socialism #1 (The People)”. The psychological Laws and Principles that increase or decrease the frequency of good or bad behaviors; and useful or self-defeating behaviors in individuals and groups of individuals…including societies of individuals.

Please scroll down the list of my topics on this page to refresh or learn these Laws and Principles for the first time. Perhaps you will have to search for #1’s title in my search box located on the upper right of my home page.

All of these Laws and Principles tend to influence the behaviors of both individuals and populations in much the same ways. They increase or decrease the frequency of occurrence of behaviors within individuals, groups, or entire societies.

The susceptibility of humans to be influenced by these Laws and Principles of Psychology,  and to show other innate characteristics and tendencies, should be what we mean by “Human Nature”. That is, it is most common for humans to prefer faster, bigger, more frequent and more convenient rewards, rather than rewards that come slower, smaller, less frequent and more difficult to achieve. It is also human nature to tend to avoid and escape unpleasant or painful experiences by any easy and immediately effective way that works.

All of this may sound like common sense…and it is! But, it includes a heck-of-a-lot more than common sense. These scientific facts have been validated around 142 years of effortful replicated psychological research.

Also, it is easy to see that what we call common sense–is not so common as we once thought!

Like it or not, deny it or not, these Psychological Laws and Principles are inalterable truths that can increase good behaviors in individuals, all human organizations, and societies. Unfortunately, these laws and principles can also increase harmful and even destructive behaviors in all of these venues. Like nuclear power they can sustain individuals and societies, or destroy them.

From this perspective, it should not be a surprise to learn that the strength and endurance of our behaviors are influenced by the rates and intervals governing how often, or how difficult it is to gain our rewards and avoid or escape unpleasant or painful conditions.

Citizens in primitive societies learn to work very hard to secure their rewards (safe shelter, food, water, warmth and protection from various dangers, etc.). They must learn to cope with the stresses of survival in very difficult, disease-ridden even war-torn environments. They learn, as other animals do , to work very hard to live in these circumstances that demand greater tenacity, perseverance, inventiveness, strength and courage to survive. Furthermore, they tend to adopt comforting religions that help them to cope with a great many stressors over which they have little personal control. This last matter will be discussed in greater detail in a later blog.

It is essential for parents in more primitive cultures to teach their children these skills and beliefs because, during the parent’s old age, they must rely upon their children’s care in order to survive.

As modernizing societies continue to develop through the generations of citizens, the strength and adaptive qualities of the population’s behavior tends to diminish. The once more common levels of tenacity, perseverance, inventiveness, courage to survive hardships, and the solidifying faith in historical traditions and religions tend to be weakened. People become dependent upon the  advances of knowledge, science and new technological conveniences.

However, human wisdom about how to best cope with these evolutions appears to lag very far behind.

In modernizing societies the historically greater demands of life give-way to more frequent, more plentiful, bigger and more easily gained rewards. Simultaneously, more convenient and certain strategies to escape or avoid discomfort, pain and even death become a new and comforting part of life. With these increasing advantages and without formally taught adaptive counter-measures to preserve the older self-sufficient skills; as well as the mental and physical hardiness of former populations; survival skills and abilities weaken. The new relatively easy life-style brings the tendency among an increasing percent of citizens (I.e., the prevalence) of the modernizing society’s population’s to lose former generation’s hardiness, tenacity and perseverance.  It is important to remember that the soft and easy life, is only so…relative to the demands of life-styles. Therefore, this tendency of population and cultural decline, presumably, has been a factor in the decline and collapse of societies throughout history.

The so called “law of least effort” facilitates the weakening of population behavior. This tends to show-up in behavior patterns we may label as laziness, impatience, low frustration tolerance, poor self-control, and decreased inventiveness, etc..

Look at our own behavior patterns today.

Why warm stuff in the oven when there is microwave? Why wash the dishes by hand when there is the dish washer? Why shovel the driveway when you have a snow blower? Why climb the stairs when there is an elevator? Why abstain from sex when easy birth control medication and abortions-on-demand are easily available? Why practice common courtesies when population density and mobility ensures you will never see a person again? Why not eat what you wish when there is medicine to treat high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease? Why walk when you can ride? Why take time and effort to shop at a store when you can order stuff over the internet? Why go to school when you can do computer assisted education? Why work when you can get welfare? Why get married when you can “hook-Up” and have sex, all the advantages of a home, and irresponsibly come and go as you please?  Why have children and raise them with great care, when it costs so much, is inconvenient and stressful, interferes with earning more money, and achieving a great career,  and so on?

It is often said that humanity has made great gains through science and technology. This is obviously True!

But what is also true, but not so obvious, is that science and technology have also had many negative psychological effects upon the the behavior patterns of the citizens within modernizing societies. It is essential to understand that the quality of citizen’s behavior patterns is influenced by sociocultural evolution, and Sociocultural evolution is influenced by the quality of citizen’s behavior patterns.

All of this, and more of course, has been an important part of the rise and fall of the greatest societies in the history of planet earth.

It is now essential to further evaluate the effects of America’s cultural evolutions upon the psychological health and viability of our society’s citizens, and visa-versa.

Battle of the Sexes….With Laughter!

Battle of the Sexes…With Laughter!

Before men and women viewing this post get their undies in a bundle, understand this: Members of both sexes have their variably present strengths and weakness. Men and women are not, and never will, be the same.

I will grant you that members of each sex can be partial imitations of the other; each tending to be a relatively poor imitation of the other. Such “sex change”attempts will still retain significant deficits and excesses that are remnants of their true biological sex.

You will find the book: Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus…very interesting. The following is a short summary of this book.

http://www.wikisummaries.org/wiki/Men_Are_From_Mars,_Women_Are_From_Venus

I read once in an old Readers Digest that : “The war between the sexes will never be won because: “There is too much fraternization with the enemy!” And, so it is.

Enjoy the following: It illustrates the frustrations of advancing technology and human nature. It is a real hoot!

I will soon feature a humorous post, at the expense of  the male side of the human species.

If you can’t laugh at this kinda stuff, there’s something wrong with ya.

Sex Problems in the Military: I Told You So #3

Sex Problems in the Military: I Told You So #3

As a psychologist in training, I was taught that there is no such thing as human nature.

Well, my teachers were wrong in an important way.

While they are correct that an assessment of the forms that human behavior, around the world, reveals amazing variability, psychological principles and the basic biology of homosapiens rule.

It is in the predictable nature of known interactions of these psychological principles and our biological tendencies, that human nature manifests itself.

In past blogs, I have strenuously objected to mixing the sexes on board ships, submarines, in close combat, and in training facilities, etc. I hope you will read some of these blogs to see my logic and the trouble for our military and our society that I predicted.

It was against our human nature to do so without big trouble.

U.S. Military Criticized About Sex Cases

Well, who would have ever imagined that? Sexual misconduct in the military!

It does not take a Ph.D. in psychology to understand and predict the results of putting women with horny young men under close-quarter, high stress conditions like intense combat zones, on Naval surface ships, and in submarines. Who on earth would be surprise by the occurrence of cases of sexual harassment (and allegations of same), consensual sex and actual pregnancies) as well as actual rapes. Also, throw flagrantly gay/lesbians into the thick fog of estrogen and androgen and what do you think will happen?

In an Associated Press article, published in the South Bend (In) Tribune on March 14, 2013, Donna Cassata and Richard Lardner documented the perfectly predictable outcome of our newly hetero/homo sexualized American Military.

Why do you think that historically, our military has worked to keep its women and men reasonably isolated from one another? Also, why do you think our military has also excluded professed homosexuals from its ranks, male and female.

The following quote is from the March 14th article:

“In a stinging rebuke of the military’s efforts to curb sexual assault, members of the Senate panel hammered Defense Department officials on Wednesday for making too little progress in combating the crimes and failing to improve a military justice system that victims describe a s slow ind uncaring.”

Amid Federal cuts to our military budgets, comes the irate insistence that we wage war on two, perhaps soon to be three or four fronts…maybe the world!

And now comes the following:

“What we need is a military with a fair and impartial criminal justice system, one that is run by professional and legal experts, not unit commanders,” said sergeant Rebekha Haverilla who was reported to have been raped while in the Army.

I certainly wish justice for Ms. Haverilla. But, her tragedy does not mask the fact that America is electing to maladaptively create a plethora of citizen and military behavior problems and then make debilitating sacrifices to generate solutions to the self-manufactured conduct problems, that are unlikely work.

As a Nation, we are defeating ourselves on many fronts. This particular self-defeat involves taking the greatest military machine in the world, designed to destroy our enemies, and warping it into a giant feckless “tail-chase” of military hetero/homo sexual legal cases.

Wake-Up America!

Women In Combat: It’s Hard To Be Me!

Ok, I am 70 yrs. old and I don’t fit-in to our “progressive culture” anymore. It would be easy to accuse me of being an old fogey, deeply entrenched in the culture of the 1940′s and 50′s, mindlessly stuck in the past and unable accept change.

I will agree with the latter assertion, but not the former one. I crave change in America that works. Change that is not maladaptive and self-destructive to our collective ability to live long and well. I deplore cultural metapsychopathology.

In the past, I have argued against openly homosexual men and women (I will not use the cute pop term “gay”) in the our military . I have also argued against placing women on submarines (having been a submariner, I will assert an intimate understanding of the trouble that this will cause). I hope you will search my blog archives to evaluate my arguments, I can assure you they are based upon much more than longings for “the old days”, though I confess to having some.

Now comes women in combat. By that I do not mean support of those in combat. I mean hand-to-hand, slit his throat, gouge his eyes out, over-power and kill him with your bare hands kinds of combat. I mean sleep, piss, shit, fart and vomit in bunkers or foxholes with men. Or sleeping “back to back and belly to belly”, with men in the dark of long and stressful nights, etc., etc..

As a psychologist, my job is to help people cope effectively with reality. Unfortunately many people will simply not come under the control of reality and they are simply beyond help. The same appears to be true of our Modern American culture, with its approximately 4.5 million of citizens.

I am reminded of the old joke: “How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?…Only one, but the light bulb has got to want to change!”

Please, on this issue of women in combat, beware of the progressive politicians who pander to feminist action groups for votes. Also, beware of the military spokespersons whose next promotion depends upon their support of the “party line”.

Please read the following short article by Linda Chavez. In my judgement (not sentiment) she is very reality based in her description of the self-inflicted harms that will come to our military when it recruits women for close combat missions.

http://townhall.com/columnists/lindachavez/2013/01/25/women-in-combat-spells-trouble-n1496957/page/full/

An important fact that is not mentioned in Chavez’ article is that women are more prone to be afflicted with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) than men. The following article about the special problems of PTSD in female combatants is very long. If you will open the article and scroll down to page 335 (it is just several pages), the second paragraph through the first two paragraphs of page 336, you will understand the essence of this problem. This is information that our progressive leaders and feminists do not want you to know. Why would I assume this? It is common knowledge among mental health professionals, but we have not heard any mention of female combatant’s special sensitivity to PTSD from our progressive friends in politics or the media.

http://www.cardozolawandgender.com/uploads/2/7/7/6/2776881/duhart_formatted.pdf

Consider this. If high percentages of our males return from war with debilitating symptoms of PTSD and a greater proportion of our females return from war with debilitating symptoms of PTSD, how does that impact the mental health of their children…America’s future. Remember, females still provide the majority of care for our children during their most formative years.

Politics aside, please, do you really think that females in close combat is good for America and its long-term viability?

Finally!

If you have had the perseverance to read all of the above, perhaps you are a glutton for punishmnent..as I am.

Please click on the link below in order to confirm the problems that have now “blown-up” in the faces of Obama’s “progressive” government and its boot-licking military leaders. We will all now suffer the, energy, money, and fighting preparedness losses to our military that only fools and rank idealogues would fail to predict.

Wake-up America!

P.S., Wait till you see what is coming as a result of admitting “practicing” homosexuals into the military.

Meet Our Electorate!..Read ’em and Weep.

Some may find this spectacle to be humorous. Nor do I think it is an illustration of “human nature”. Rather, I believe it is an illustration of something even more sinister: American Culture.

I think about the fact that these are some of America’s parents, jurors, and voters.  Perhaps there is a teacher amongst this group. I am not amused…are you?

America Needs Term Limits IV

February 26, 2010

America Needs Term Limits IV

I have wondered how the poor starving people around the world who fight with each other over a limited supply of food or water dropped in their midst after some disaster or holocaust differ from us, as we fight for limited federal monies through our political representatives.

I have also wondered how any of this is different from the hordes of hungry squawking sea gulls that fight with each over the limited supply of stale bread that I have thrown to them on the shores of my beloved Lake Michigan.

The principles are the same, desperate creatures fighting to get at a limited supply of sustenance (rewards or, more technically,  reinforcers). What do you expect?!

What do you think the old phrase, “All politics are local means”?

It means that, normally, people are primarily concerned with their own best interests. Put in pejorative terms, people are selfish and self-centered. So, what’s the big news about that? Our founding fathers designed our government, best they knew how, to take this basic fact of human (animal) nature into account. They really did an amazingly great  job of it!

However, they could never have imagined a technological, communication/ information, or economic-based America and world as it now exists.

One of the reasons that incumbents in congress virtually always win elections is because if they throw enough “bread” to their constituents (the sea gulls), their constituents naturally will “peck the keys” needed to keep the bread flowing. Why should they ever vote for someone who has not demonstrated the ability to keep the bread flowing into their pockets or projects?

A principle of behavioral psychology is the Matching Law. Simplified, it would predict that people will pull the voting  levers, at higher rates, for those individuals who provide them the highest rates of rewards, I.e., money and power to them and their locals. That is exactly what long-term incumbents are able to do best. Think of them as the keys that we pigeons peck maximize our rewards. This is truly a mutually addictive parasitic relationship, masquerading as a beneficial symbiotic relationship. The way to tell that it is an addictive parasitic relationship is that neither party can ever be satiated and  the relationship is killing the host, America.

In all of this, it would be better if our representatives (the money/power dispensers) were less effective.  It would seem good if they were just effective enough to make decisions that would be only moderately beneficial to their home regions and more beneficial to America as a whole.

This will require more than curtailing great contributions to politicians from special interest groups and implementing term limits. But, these appear to me to be very important steps in the right direction.

Destructive Moral Relativism

August 24, 2009

Destructive Moral Relativism

The following quote is taken from The Great Disruption: Human Nature and The Reconstruction of Social Order, by Francis Fukuyama.

“I said earlier that there were two main sources of the enlarged radius of trust: religion and politics. In the West, Christianity first established the principle of universality of human dignity, one that was brought down from the heavens and turned into a secular doctrine of  universal human equality by the enlightenment” (p. 279).

“liberal democracies today enshrine this principle of universal recognition.” (p.280)

“The chief question for the future is whether these universalistic forms of cultural identity will survive the onslaught from a principled belief in multiculturalism that goes beyond the toleration of cultural diversity to its active celebration and promotion. The moral miniaturization that was described in the earlier discussion of American civil society has come about only partly because the underlying society has become more diverse. The important driver of this process is the spread of a principled belief in moral relativism—the idea that no particular set of values or norms can or aught to be authoritative. When this relativism extends to the political values on which the regime itself is based, then liberalism begins to undermine itself” (pps. 281-282).
