Let’s Teach Good Values To Our Children

Let’s Teach Good Values To Our Children

The following is an excellent article on much of what is going wrong in America.

I do not agree that children are born barbarians, as the author implies with his quote of Thomas Sowell.

By the way, this will be only one of a very few times that I am likely to disagree with Thomas Sowell; a brilliant conservative economist who I greatly admire.

As a developmental psychologist, I would ask you to consider that infants are born with certain biologically based tendencies that become more complex and refined with maturation. Also, just as importantly, healthy infants show an amazing and growing ability to learn increasingly complex behavior patterns, discriminations, emotions, and expectations from their environments. Their environments are composed of their physical surroundings; including behaving people, their artifacts, technology, practices and rituals…i.e.,  the values and reflections of values that comprise one’s socioculture.

I believe that certain things desperately need correction in modern America’s socioculture and Mr. Hawkins has clearly identified some of these things.

To both escape and avoid our children developing into barbarians, we must teach the right values to them. In this we are now failing.

Please read Mr. Hawkins’ short and informative article.

My knowledge in the arena of that which is being spoken of is skimpy at best;I find the logic sound and woud surmise from my perspective, though it be limited, that each of us is born with 99.9%
of like DNA (Gene Pool); the exposure to the varying environments in which we become encompassed utimately defines us as a person.

I would submit, again acknowledging my imaturity on the subject, that the one hunderdth of a percent which is unique to us individually palys a major role in conjunction with the contact associated environments in derterming if we have demonic tendencies in our behavior resulting in savage barbaric acts.

I would have to agree with Dr.Mawhinney that the use of the word’s barbarian, savages is not supportive at the infant stage of life.

The Free Dictionary defines “barbarian” as:
    1. A member of a people considered by those of another nation or group to have a primitive civilization.
    2. A fierce, brutal, or cruel person.
    3. An insensitive, uncultured person; a boor.

The Free Dictionary defines “savage” as:
    1. A person regarded as primitive or uncivilized.
    2. A person regarded as brutal, fierce, or vicious

My interpretation of “person” denotes extended exposure of the
    human species to the environment.

I find Mr.Hawkins’s essay informative and on target regarding family/societal values.

Howard, Thanks for you thoughtful reply. While our children are not born barbarians, make no mistake about it, life in Modern American culture can and all-to-often does transform them into barbarians.
