The Security/Liberty Conundrum

The Security/Liberty Conundrum

The following comments by Gonzo appeared in the comments section of my blog. I think it merits more attention, so I placed it here.

Gonzo wrote:

When I sounded the alarm bells over the Patriot Act, most people commented that it was ok with them if our Constitutional rights were stepped all over, after all, it was only the enemy we were fighting…right?

So why did 93% of the Senate vote to remove the right to Due Process for US citizens, just recently? http://www.infowars.com/indefinite-detention-bill-passes-senate-93-7/

Why is it so hard to believe for some people that our government is trying to take away our guns – to make controlling us easier? http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_162-57338546-10391695/documents-atf-used-fast-and-furious-to-make-the-case-for-gun-regulations/

Why are people so silent over the unconscionable violation of our 4th Amendment right NOT to be subjected to unreasonable search and seizure? http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/12/03/85-year-old-grandmother-to-sue-tsa-after-strip-search-at-jfk-airport/

NEVER, EVER, EVER, under any circumstance, allow a government to breach the US Constitution, EVER.

Do you really believe that this is temporary to fight some “soon to end” war on terror? Foolishness!!! Who is the enemy? What country can be attacked to end terrorism? Who can be arrested and terrorism instantly dies? Shouldn’t everything have stopped with Osama dead? So why further encroachment on the Constitution?

Easy, because “terrorism” will exist forever by government definition.

“Those who would give up liberty for security deserve neither.” – Benjamin Franklin

End of Quote by Gonzo.

The following is an adaptation of my response to Gonzo’s comments:

Yes, Gonzo, you are making me fearful. Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus, the Japanese were interned during WWII, and there are more examples of U.S.  suspensions of civil rights during war-time. We can argue about the propriety of these two, and other war-time curtailments of freedom in America. But, it is notable that we have always returned these Consitituional rights to citizens following the end of these wars.

That said,  our government is now predominantly a progressive/socialist one, moving swiftly to unalloyed socialism.  The history of civilizations reliably notes that governments tend to move from socialism to tyranny–the confiscation of liberty.  I am now greatly concerned that the so-called “War on Terror” is capable of dealing such fatal permenant blow to the balance of liberty and security in America.

Maintaining the workable balance of liberty and security in any socioculture that hopes to live long and well requires the application of  rare and delicate political art-forms. My historical readings suggest that every form of government, and every written governing doctrine, contains the seeds of its own destruction within.

I can only hope that I am wrong about these “seeds of destruction” in our own case. Let us pray that the fabled courage, industry, and wisdom of our citizenry will, once again, save Our Republic.

Wake-Up America!

Can Virtue Be Its Own Reward?

December 12, 2011

Can Virtue Be Its Own Reward?

Virtue really can be its own reward, as it may seem trite to say. But for this to happen requires that our behavior be repeatedly, and in many ways, reinforced by a surrounding social group. With such a history, the individual’s actions that the social group calls virtuous can become learned generalized reinforcers to the behaving individual. Under these conditions the behavior of the individual actually does become self-reinforcing (its own reward).  However other good outcomes caused by this behavior are likely to be delayed and unknown to the well-behaving individual. This is the main reason that it is important to identify good and effective moral codes to teach within all sociocultures. Children, adolescents and even many adults cannot anticipate the delayed harms that later derive from bad behaviors and are therefore doomed to foolishly damage themselves and their sociocultures.

George Washington knew this and so should we all.

There exists in the economy and course of nature an indissoluble union between virtue and happiness … we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.” –George Washington, First Inaugural Address, 1789

The eternal rules of order and right, to which Washington was referring comprise a moral code  which has been recognized by philosophers and religious leaders through the ages: It is called Natural Law.

This moral code, which provided the guiding ethics for America’s 20th century meteoric rise to world dominance may someday be confirmed and supplemented with ethical precepts derived from a scientific analysis of moral values and actions. Such an analysis is possible and essential to the long-term survival of all sociocultures.

Gingrich Unethical? You Decide!

December 10, 2011

Gingrich Unethical? You Decide!

I like Gingrich because he is very bright, a historian, very tough and very experienced at transforming  political goals into reality.

If I find that he is an unethical person, I will absolutely reject him as a candidate.  I hope you would do the same.

For me the question of his ethics is the pivotal issue. It  is the same for me with  Herman Cain.  If I find these two individuals to be basically ethical people, I would like to see Gingrich as President and Cain as Vice President, in training for the Presidency.

I am watching closely and I hope you are also:

Steve Wynn Shreds President Obama

December 9, 2011

Steve Wynn Shreds President Obama

I view the gambling industry as one piece of a mosaic of symptoms and causes of America’s decline.

Yes, the gambling  industry is a money-maker. They love to call their activity “Gaming”,  because it sounds less pernicious. You can change the name, but the game stays the same. B.S. walks but behavior ,with its immediate and long-term consequences, talks.

The facts are that the gambling industry powerfully recruits hundreds of thousands of America’s citizens to compulsive (some call it addictive) gambling. Compulsive gambling destroys individuals, families, and businesses and it damages communities. Rather than manufacturing and marketing solid goods with broad utility, America is “manufacturing and marketing” activities formerly classified as vices (gambling, pornography, “medical” marijuana, and prostitution–coming soon, I’ll bet). It attracts graft and other forms of crime and communities bear the resulting soaring costs. Regional crime rates, divorce rates and suicide rates increase when casinos move into an area. Communities incure large debts for infrastructural improvements necessary to attract casinos. Then, when other gambling venues proliferate in surrounding regions, their gambling-based revenues diminish, leaving them in financial trouble. Gambling centers offer food, clothing, other forms of entertainment that drive local small business out of business, or force them to install gambling machines to retain their dwindling clientele. Child-care centers and family friendly services  offered at large gambling establishments groom our children for futures  of compulsive gambling.

The learning principles involved in the production of compulsive gambling are well known to the science of psychology.

For a more complete analysis of the damages of the gambling industry in America, see my chapter 3, in Gambling: Behavior Theory, Research, and Application, by P.M. Ghezzi, et al.. The book was Published by Context Press in 2006.

The gambling industry replaces valuable businesses and does significant psychological harm wherever it goes. It does long-term damage to America’s sociocultural viability.

Watch Steve Wynn (a gambling king pin in Las Vegas) accurately shred President Obama and his administration.

I guess it takes a shyster to recognize and most clearly describe another shyster.

America’s Financial Armageddon

December 7, 2011

America’s Financial Armageddon

I cannot vouch for all of the financial data provided in this shocking video, but they do  appear to be in the “ball park” resemble what I can glean through the news media and various political discussions made public from Capital Hill.  Also, historical economic trends that I have intermittently monitored from more scholarly resources have  not been in conflict with our current predicament and the general appropriate alarm raised by the following video.

That America is now in a potentially cataclysmic  financial position is beyond debate. That our financial problems have been made worse by a lack of ethical conduct on the part of our political and business leaders and by progressive socialist politics should be clear to anyone not blindly worshiping that life-style and political ideology.

The window of opportunity to exert control over America’s fate will close very soon. We cannot  fail in our moral responsibility to save America and our children’s future through the power of our vote.

Please watch the following video and decide to take personal action through the power of your vote and day-to-day behavior to begin the process of change back to the  traditional American Values that made this nation great.

Please send this video to everyone you know.

It’s The Morality–Stupid!

Founder's Quote Daily

“The belief in a God All Powerful wise and good, is so essential to the moral order of the world and to the happiness of man, that arguments which enforce it cannot be drawn from too many sources nor adapted with too much solicitude to the different characters and capacities impressed with it.” –James Madison, letter to Frederick Beasley, 1825

Follow The Patriot Post:

The teaching and learning of a strong moral code is the bedrock of a Democratic Republic. Without this, I believe, nothing can save it from decline.  I will soon do a series of postings with the topic of moral behavior as my focus. This series will be composed of excerpts from a book that I am writing.

The Big Picture Of America’s Decline

December 3, 2011

The Big Picture Of America’s Decline

Over coffee this morning my dear wife, Sally, asked why is the middle class shrinking in America. My first response was, “I don’t know”.

My second response was to think. It was, after all, fairly early in the morning and I was just having my first cup of coffee and some energetic thinking was called for!

As I began to assemble some of the facts that I accumulated studying America’s decline over the past decades,  some interactive and synergistic trends became clear.

I recalled the trends of population reproductive data that I graphed some years ago. The reproductive rates of the middle class were declining. Simultaneously, the reproductive rates of our poor and undereducated population were much higher.

I also recalled that large proportions of our children were, and they still are,  living in poverty. In poverty bad things happen to children at a disproportionately higher rate. These bad things impair the children in many ways that are very difficult, often impossible, to repair. These impairments lead to behavior patterns that do not lend themselves to gainful employment. All too often they lead to increased disability claims for physical and/or mental problems, criminal behavior and/or lives on welfare. Also, keep in mind that the reproductive rate of this population, when grown up,  is going to be disproportionately high.

Beginning in the 1970’s, double-digit inflation forced many mothers to leave their children and homes to enter the workforce. Since then the economy has recovered but now has deteriorated again, even more severely. Parents now are often working two jobs that often have fewer, or none, of the benefits of past years. Also, more frequently now, the jobs are not full-time jobs. Employers are commonly not providing 4o hours of work in order to avoid paying benefits to their employees. A large number of parents have to work two or more part-time jobs and are therefore less often at home while standing still, or falling behind financially. These and other factors related to modernity have increased the divorce rate and have increased the frequency of unmarried cohabitation with children. As a result, middle class children, as long noted by sociologists, are increasingly suffering from family disorganization, a lack of parenting, and a lack of supervision similar to that experienced by children living in poverty. Middle class children are suffering from a lack of acculturation and behavioral/psychological impairments similar to their cohorts living in poverty.

Children living among the monied upper-class are disproportionately more likely to be taught a form of “learned helplessness” because their needs are commonly  over-gratified through no effort of their own.  For markedly different reasons, they too are at increased risk of becoming self-centered, undisciplined, irresponsible and delinquent in ways similar to those children who are so afflicted while growing-up in poverty and the middle-class.

All of this is ongoing in the context of a complex swirl of factors that mediate America’s sociocultural decline. The decline is most evident in a more general loss in respect for law and order and a loss of  traditional mores and folk-ways, morality/ethics, religion with its symbols and Holy Days, and the nuclear family. All of this is continuing to  unravel under the  media subculture’s “carpet-bombing” of our children and youth (not to mention ourselves!) with exciting and enticing displays of antisocial behavior, pornography, gambling, and other mindless forms of ” wine and circus”.

All of this, delivered by an all-pervasive morally bankrupt technological media that babysits and teaches our children and adolescents for more hours, and more effectively, than does our public schools, families, and churches.

All of this continues with increasing pervasiveness as our indigenous population’s overall rate of birth is in decline, the indigenous working-age population shrinks and the burden of our old-age population grows rapidly.

To compensate for our shrinking working-age population, the federal government has  opened, and kept open, the floodgates of illegal immigration.  This has produced a great influx of under-educated, black-market workers, who overburden our incompetent public education system, welfare offices, hospitals, police, courts, and prisons. With this growing  population has also come their increased  birth and crime rates, well-above that of our general citizen population.

Over-arching all of these damaging evolutions, and more not identified, is a largely corrupt political and economic system.  As our Founding Fathers understood, and we will now learn, our Democratic Republic and Capitalistic economic system will simply not work without very strong moral infrastructure. Our increasingly corrupt political system has  gained power, and has grown its constituencies,  by rewarding indolent, immoral, irresponsible, illegal and massively dependent behavior patterns  within our population. Our government also rewards increased rates of reproduction within this growing dependent population (that does not pay federal taxes) and in doing so solidifies its evolving socialistic  form of political power and tyrannical control. The tyrannical control becomes reciprocal when an increasing proportion of America’s population votes itself largess from its government,  stolen from an over-taxed and shrinking middle class.

All of this is destroying America.

Sally then asked, “what can be done to change all of this”.

In frustration I snapped: Nothing!!

Upon further consideration, and looking for a way to get out of this blog, I will simply say:

Stop Our Obviously Stupid and Self-destructive Behavior Patterns!!

V. Thomas Mawhinney, Ph.D., 12/2/11

P.S.

You can be certain that the Big Picture of America’s Decline, is much more complex than my abbreviated explanation presented here. There are many other domestic and global forces  involved:  More on all of this at a later time.
