I rather like the idea of a system of more flavorful laws based on the whims of state legislatures.
For example, if you wanted to live in a place where you could smoke openly and freely, you could move to North Carolina.
If you wanted to live in a state where drugs were legal and the state profited from the legal sale of drugs, you could move to California.
If you wanted to live in a state where you were forced to purchase insurance, you could move to Indiana, where you are forced to purchase insurance in order to register a vehicle. Although granted I believe a very high percentage of states have that requirement now.

With the exception of matters affecting national security, the States were left a great deal of autonomy. States rights have been under attack from the federal government for a long time. With rare exception, State’s freedom to evolve in unique ways has a strong evolutionary advantage. Unique State’s practices can be viewed as pilot studies of various sociocultural adaptations. The successful ones to be imitated by other states, and hence, the Union of States.
Recently, all too often, those State’s practices most imitated have been experiments in hedonism that damage our combined evolutionary advantages.
